CHAPTER 16

As I was dragged upward from the sea of sleep that could persist even through a thunderstorm, my foggy brain tried to figure out what in the world was waking me up. If Amelia’s yelling couldn’t do it, and an earthquake couldn’t do it, surely this had to be some form of national catastrophe, right?

That, or my phone was ringing.

Opening my eyes, I watched it vibrate on my pillow, making its inexorable way to the edge of the pillow and to the edge of the bed. I was too sleepy to stop it and instead let out a sigh as finally it fell to the mattress with a soft thump, and then to the floor with a louder one.

Oh well. Too bad. Whoever needed me would just have to wait.

Though I did have to wonder how in the world I’d woken up to my phone ringing.

It stopped and started again a second later, vibrating against the wall and adding an extra level of volume to the noise that was fighting to get me truly awake. That was probably why. If whoever was calling had been doing so for long enough, I figured it could break through the nearly impenetrable wall of sleep I’d been behind.

With a groan, I shimmied to the side of the bed, unwilling to move in earnest, and reached down to pick up my phone from the floor.

It was Everett.

Eyes narrowed, I brought the phone to my ear and answered it, mouth open to ask why he was calling me at six forty-two in the morning.

“Can I come over?” He sounded almost nervous and preoccupied with…something?

“Umm, what?” I asked, my voice softer and less patient than I’d intended. But I couldn’t help it. This was early.

“Now, please?”

I sat up with a yawn, trying to figure out what was going on with him. “Yeah, umm. I guess so, Ev. But I don’t understand what-”

“I know. I’ll explain everything. I’ll see you in five minutes.” He hung up, prompting me to wonder if he’d already been on his way over here with the intent of coming in whether or not I’d said yes.

Outside, thunder rumbled in the distance, making me squint up at the window over my bed. Rain was beginning to beat against the glass, and as I wracked my brain for the weather forecast from the day before, I found that I couldn’t recall any mention of storms. Wasn’t this supposed to be south of us?

Well, apparently, the weather didn’t like to be told what to do. Either way, I shrugged and got to my feet. It was too early to get dressed, so I grabbed my hoodie from the dresser and wrapped it around my body, shivering as the warmth from my bed seeped out of my body and into the air around me.

If Everett didn’t have a good reason for getting me up, I would end him.

Creeping out into the still-dark house, I found that Scott’s car was gone when I looked out the window.
