Chapter Seventeen

The last couple weeks melted away, with more band and sailing practice several times a week. The sailing wasn’t as scary as the first time. Each day we went out, I had a little more confidence sitting at the rudder. And each time we got together to practice, my voice got a little stronger. Annick began adding her own harmonies under me. We were coming together as an actual band.

But we still had our list. We weren’t close to being on our way yet.

Tristan and I were silent as we walked towards the road to Marie’s. The morning air was cool, but not cold, though I’d dressed a bit too optimistically in shorts and a hoodie. The wind was a bit chilly against my bare legs. Tristan, forever in jeans, was in better shape than me, though if I stared hard enough, goosebumps covered his bare arms.

As we walked past Reagan’s house, I paused to peer through all the leaves and branches into the driveway, in case today would be the day she finally returned.

“What is it?” Tristan asked, glancing over my shoulder at the trees.

“I knew the people who lived there,” I said and walked again at a quicker pace. “Trying to see if they’re here.”

“We can stop and look,” he offered. “We got time.”

“No, it’s fine. I don’t think they’re there.”

“One of your summer friends?” he asked as he caught up with me.

I glanced behind me again at the trees that surrounded the house. What had sent her family away? Without telling anyone, without giving reason. They hadn’t put the cottage up for sale. Where were they?

She haunted me too. Not in the way Aaron haunted me. It was more desperate, more longing, and more sad than anything. I wanted nothing but to make a new last memory of her. To have a chance to say goodbye for real and that I was sorry. Then, I’d let her disappear again if that was what she wanted.

“A girl used to live there. She was basically my best friend here. But I don’t know where she went.”

“Oh.” His eyebrows fell in disappointment, but I wasn’t sure if he was being sympathetic towards my plight, or sad for himself. Not that he had anything to worry about with Reagan and me. That ship had sailed already. Not that he’d be into me anyway. I wasn’t the best judge of those things, considering my entire relationship with Aaron.

“Back then, we didn’t take one another’s numbers or add one another on Facebook. We counted on getting together the next summer. Except…”

“She’s not here.”

“Yeah. And I was gone for a bit, you know. With…”

“I know.”

The muscles in my shoulders relaxed, grateful he didn’t make me say his name. He chewed on his lower lip, eyebrows still screwed in their intense position.

“The last time we were together…wasn’t the best,” I admitted, hoping the context would help relax him a bit. “Not my finest moment. And being here, surrounded by all these memories—the only thing I want is to see her one more time and say I’m sorry.
