Chapter Four

The sorcerer who hoped to take over Heroes Grotto lived in a stone tower out past the other side of the canyon. Two of the sisters drove a cart for us to the small town between the grotto and sorcerer. According to Astris, the town’s mayor was looking for someone to deal with him too.

“Two quests, one kill,” I say and Astris hums a question at me. “Don’t worry about it, babe.”

The village, called Goldenvale, looks pretty standard for an RPG. The buildings sit at the crossroads, and there’s only a few houses spread out just past the larger buildings. The sisters drop us off in the center of town, and Astris gives them a cheery wave before they return to the grotto without ever looking back.

There are people walking around, and two guards stationed at the well, but none of them pay us any attention. I nod to the largest building. “Let’s see if the Mayor is in.”

It turns out the building is the city hall, as I suspected. The Mayor is pacing in front of a long desk, with golden light shining down on him. When we get close enough, he turns and greets us.

“Have you come to save Goldenvale?” He’s a portly old man, his face rosy like a young and bald Santa Claus. He doesn’t even seem to notice Astris beside me.

“I hear you’ve got a problem with a sorcerer?” I say, resting my foot on the seat of a chair, crossing my arms. None of the characters in this room are remotely warrior like; they’re not even armed. A woman serving tankards of ale approaches me with a flirtatious smile and a heaving bosom.

“Ale for you, good sir?”

“Thank you.” I take one with a wink. The amber liquid is hoppy and light, with a citrus after finish. Definitely delicious.

“Let me know if there is anything else I can do for you,” she says, stepping closer.

Astris pushes between us, a fierce, possessive look on her face. “He has me for any of his needs.” The sublime elf from earlier is gone and now she’s intimidating. She might be a healer, but I’d hate to be on the other side of her glare.

I definitely like this possessive and fierce side of her.

“The sorcerer has been stealing our cattle, and now he has gone too far!” The mayor booms and the other characters murmur their agreements. “He has taken the blacksmith’s daughter, Helena, who was Goldenvale’s pride and joy. She was to join the royal army and aid in the quest to save the king. But now she is under an evil spell.”

"So, let me guess," I say, turning my attention fully back to the mayor. "You want me to rescue the girl and kill the sorcerer?"

"If you are capable," he says with caution, raising his hands. "The sorcerer is powerful and many of our soldiers lie dead at the base of his tower."

Quest Accepted: Damsel in Distress. 250 experience.
