JAMIE
Waking up alone was like a stab to the heart. The last thing Jamie remembered was the feel of soft fingers against her skin and the tickle of pine-smelling hair against her cheek. Now she was completely alone. Not even Alicaster was beside her.
It wasnât a dream, was it? Jamie wondered as she slowly got dressed for the day.
When she had her jumper halfway off, she found herself shivering from a cold draft. Taking it off quickly, she went to grab her clean shirt when she caught sight of Artemis in the tentâs entrance.
âAh!â She grabbed her clean shirt to cover her bare self with. âClose the door, Artemis.â
Artemis tilted her head. Jamie internally chastised herself. She kept forgetting Artemis couldnât understand her. Thankfully, on hearing her name, the wild-woman came fully into the tent, letting the flap of material drop behind her.
With her back to Artemis, Jamie set about putting on her bra and shirt as speedily as she could. Which, considering her injured hands, wasnât easy. After snapping herself with the bra strap and punching herself in the head when putting on the shirt, she finally was dressed. Changed, she turned to face Artemis who, to her surprise, was holding up her discarded jumper. Her eyes were curious as she turned it this way and that.
âWould you like to try it on?â Artemis glanced up at her with a frown. âRight ⦠uh, how to do thisâ¦â
Crawling forward on her knees, Jamie came to Artemisâs side and reached out for the jumper. Artemis gave it to her after a momentâs hesitation. With a smile, Jamie held the head hole up to Artemisâs face and waited for permission. Artemis bowed her head towards her.
Gently, Jamie slid the jumper over her head, making sure to not move too fast and spook her. Artemis stayed quiet the whole time. Her gaze never left Jamie, those all-seeing green eyes watching as Jamie helped her into the jumper.
Jamie took extra care in tugging the jumper over Artemisâs torso. With so much bare skin, she didnât want to accidentally brush anything she shouldnât. A final tug at the hem had the jumper fully in place.
âThere,â Jamie said with a smile. âYou look great.â
She raised her fingers up to untuck the hair that was caught beneath the collar. As she did, she finally locked eyes with the woman in front of her, and her fingers froze at the edges of Artemisâs hair.
Jamie hadnât realised how close sheâd gotten until her nose was brushing the tip of Artemisâs. A soft puff of air brushed against her lips as she gazed deeply into the green in front of her, noticing specks of grey within them. A hand came up to rest gently on the fingers that still held the tips of Artemisâs hair. The stayed like that untilâ
âKnock, knock.â The two women jumped as the tent entrance opened and a smiling Ritchie appeared. âHey, breakfast isâ Oh.â
Jamie moved away from Artemis instantly, but the rise of Ritchieâs eyebrow was enough for her to know she would likely be facing some questions later.
