“There's no need to fuss,” she whispered softly, leaning against a stack of pillows in the master bedroom. “Bernard, it was just a brief weak spell. I'll be fine in the morning, I'm only...”

Her voice trailed off for a moment, and she struggled to find the strength to continue.

“I'm only sorry that I embarrassed you,” she continued. “In front of your friends.”

“Why won't that stupid doctor let you take part in the new trial?” he asked, pacing back and forth by the window. “I've offered him more money than he could earn in a lifetime, but he keeps saying that you're not suitable!”

“Have you stopped to consider that he might be right?”

“I won't lose you!” he snapped, turning to her. “We have our lives to live together, and I won't let some doctor shut this down just because of his stupid ethics!”

“Don't talk like that,” she replied. “When you're angry, sometimes you remind me of...”

She hesitated, not sure whether she should finish that sentence.

“I don't like it when you remind me of your father,” she continued finally. “That's all. Why don't you come and sit with me?”

“There'll be plenty of time for that later,” he replied, resuming his endless pacing for a few seconds before stopping and looking out the window. He could just about see lights in the forest. “Those women know things,” he continued. “You told me yourself, they have secrets. What if they could fix you?”

“They can't.”

“But what if they could?” he sneered, turning to her. “You've gone on plenty of times before about their books, and about how they can heal little wounds. What if they could do more than that? What if they could fix what's wrong with you?”

“No,” she said, shaking her head, “now you're getting desperate. Please, Bernard, just calm down and come and sit with me.”

Doing as she requested, he perched on the side of the bed. Even as she took hold of his hand and squeezed tight, however, he was already staring into space as he tried to come up with another plan.

“Let things take their course,” she said, hoping against hope that she was getting through to him. “There's a plan for all of us. Let's just both try to be patient.”
