Josh had to drive.

When he got into the car, he glanced over at the passenger's seat, and he expected to see Alyssa plopped down. Instead, he heard the back doors open.

Both of them.

Alyssa and Trevor climbed into the back seat, and they didn't buckle up. Instead, they started whispering. In spite of everything Josh wanted to believe about himself, he listened intently, straining against the silence in the car as he tried to pick out the exact words. As they whispered back and forth like eager teenagers hoping to hide from the adults, what were they saying? What were they sharing?

They didn't even know one another!

And yet, Josh glanced up at the rear view mirror. Surreptitiously, he adjusted it, so he could see Alyssa. For a moment, he was worried it would be obvious what he had done, yet she had all of her attention aimed at Trevor. In that moment, her fingers slid along his cheek, and she seemed to enjoy the rough texture of his trimmed beard.

Josh pulled the car out of the parking lot, and they drove through the streets. Time seemed to slow down, especially at the stoplights. Occasionally, he heard whispers and giggles. At other points, there was the deep, resonant growl of this man, or maybe that was just Josh's imagination. He couldn't really tell one way or the other.

What if he pulled over on the side of the road and told him to get out? What would happen then?

Probably nothing.

They would probably just laugh at him and tell him to drive, and Josh knew what would happen.

He would obey.

Again and again, he opened his mouth, like he thought he could interrupt. Maybe he thought there was something he could say, but it wouldn't work. Josh could already feel that underlying truth deep within his body. As much as he hated to admit it, even in the privacy of his own head, he knew they could do whatever they wanted, and he would wait. Worse, he would cooperate.

He tightened his grip on the steering wheel, and he turned left and right. He navigated his way through the city and back toward the suburbs.

They were going home.
