In the not-so-distant world of the watchers, Anabel sat at her monitor to observe Charlie as he boarded the plane. She watched with more than a duty; it was an in-built requirement. She could feel the desire to do so; throughout her being, there was purpose.

Blue lights flickered as watcher after watcher returned to their desks around her. The walls absorbed each flash only moments after it had appeared, leaving no lingering trace.

The room seated an unfathomable number, and Anabel was unaware as the flickers began to change slowly from blue to purple in an area far away.

A wave of curiosity washed over her, creating a need to leave Charlie’s station. She had recently located Jenny’s desk - and her watcher. When Charlie had been asleep, she watched Jenny. There was something that compelled her to do so, but she was unsure as to precisely what. She had stared at the screen and watched Jenny.

She needed to investigate the corruption but now was a perfect opportunity to learn more about Jenny. Anabel had dealt with her corrupted watcher, and now she could find out more about the real Jenny, away from Charlie.

There were no signs of corruption in her immediate area. The last had long gone, most likely locked away until their watch ended. Since then, Jenny had been assigned a new watcher. It filled Anabel with relief but also left her stomach with a peculiar feeling that she hadn’t experienced before.

Anabel walked over to the desk. She ensured no one was watching before looking into the screen. There was something strange happening. Jenny’s new watcher was doing more than just watching.

Three men sat at the front of a small, square room. Two leant back with notepads on their laps, while the other straddled his chair in a fashion that was not becoming of his years.

All three men were well into their forties, and it was very apparent that they worked on their appearances – all three had sparkling white teeth, wore slim-fit trousers and designer shirts. However, no matter how hard they tried, they would never again look as young as they strived to be.

The man straddling the chair, stroked his chin and leant back to give himself some space to gesture with his hands.

“Can you do Victorian? I can hear posh English, not Victorian, darling.”

Jenny, wearing a white blouse and black trousers, stood across from them. Her hair tickled her shoulders, bobbing up and down with the assistance of hair spray, as she talked.

“I’m sorry, what’s the line again?” she asked.

“Father, if you must go then I implore you, take me with you. I have more to offer than you realise. I have more to offer than anybody could possibly realise.”

Jenny imagined herself in the scenario of a Victorian household, desperate for her father not to leave, not again. She took a moment and then performed.

The casting agents processed her attempt. After a moment of silence, one of the agents responded.

“Not bad,” he suggested.

“I’m not sure. I still don’t hear Victorian.
