When You Think You’re Going Crazy

I woke again in the afternoon. Joy had changed into leggings and a sweater, and was reading from her perch on the chair across from the futon.

I stretched and was sore but otherwise felt fine. Tired still, but otherwise no worse from wear, and the terror of being in the water—or, rather, what I’d seen around the lake—far from my mind. So far it felt like a dream.

One I couldn’t entirely forget.

Every time I closed my eyes, I remembered the strange shape of birch trees where they didn’t belong, the way that weird white waxy thing approached right up at the bow of the boat. Every time I thought of it, it kicked my heartrate up, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to sleep anymore.

I ate some leftover mac and cheese for lunch and remembered to take my pills. I added Ativan to it, which calmed the panic every time I thought of the water. I mourned the loss of my sketchbook—I had quite a few drawings in there—but I would not be heading up to paint more that afternoon. Instead, I went to lie down in bed and read.
