I was willing to fight my way through every damn Hunter to keep Everly safe, and I didn’t care how much blood I had to spill—theirs or mine. Whatever it took to protect the omega sleeping in my bed.

It hit me hard how fucking vulnerable she was when I left to grab food and clothes for her, picking up toiletries and nesting materials while I was at it. I shut the door behind myself on the way back in and froze in the doorway, watching her sleep on her side, her hands tucked beneath her cheek and her face slack, gentle and pure.

After everything she’d been through, her heart was so damn good, and she was so strong, so fucking brave. I’d do anything—and I meant anything—to keep her safe.

Careful not to wake her, I set down the bowl of cereal—her favourite—and arranged the clothes and materials on top of my desk, wondering if she’d like the colours and fabrics I’d chosen, nervous to hear her opinion. I felt like a lad trying to impress his first crush again, but it was a good feeling. It reminded me how fucking lucky I was to have found Ever.

I’d pretty much given up on finding a mate years ago. Most alphas met their mates in their twenties or thirties. I was forty-four, and a cynical bastard, and my day job was literally helping run a shady MC and beating up our enemies. Or maybe it wasn’t my job, but my hobby. I’d assumed whatever gods assigned our fates had decided I didn’t deserve a mate.

But here was Ever, fierce and innocent, brave and vulnerable and sensual. She knew her own mind, and knew exactly what she wanted. And for some wild reason, she wanted the cynical bastard.

I couldn’t keep the grin off my face as I sat beside her, remembering the heaven of being inside her. She’d almost ruined me. Or maybe she had ruined me, and I was a different person now. A mated man. Fuck, that sounded good.

It wasn’t just my brothers I had anymore; I had my mate, too.

I brushed a strand of dark hair from her face, my fingers lingering on her cheek, and the soft sound she let out as she leaned into my touch shot right to my heart. I was a soft fucker; no matter how many people I made bleed, I couldn’t hide my soft heart. Especially not around Ever.

I just had to hope she wouldn’t wake up and regret being with me. I wouldn’t keep her locked up, no matter how badly I wanted her to myself. But if she walked out and went back to Calvin … the thought made me want to punch something. Made me sick.

Everly made a soft, throaty sound and rolled closer, throwing her arm across my lap, and I melted like the giant sap I was. I couldn’t keep the smile off my face at her sweetness, as if she could sense my conflict and wanted to soothe me, even in her sleep.
