Chapter Twelve

Ward

Working with the other supernaturals was terrific. I’d never experienced so much power. All this time, I’d thought I was a shifter. Even though I was incredibly proud of being a wolf shifter, I hadn’t thought about what other powers came with that except shifting. The more work we did with the gods, though, showed how much stronger being a wolf shifter was.

“Focus on your aura,” Baldur said. “See it moving outwards and covering you and those beside you.”

I focused on the shape of my aura and Savannah, who was shifted and sitting on my back. The spider shifters' aura mingled with mine. I watched in awe as our aura filtered out, creating a barrier surrounding us.

"Jericho, shoot,” Baldur directed.

I watched the dragon shifter throw a ball of fire in our direction. I gasped as the fire bounced off the barrier that we’d built around us.

“We did it,” Savannah laughed through the link.

“We did,” I cheered back.

It was something we’d been working on for the last two days. Each of us had powers that seemed to complement the other. We’d discovered that mine and Savannah’s aura was able to create a barrier around us to stop hellfire from breaking through.

“Good job, Ward, try and push the barrier out; I want you to encase Donte and Four,” he said.

I focused on pushing the barrier out and watched as he surrounded Donte and Four behind the protective shield.

“Shoot,” Baldur directed again.

Four gasped as Jericho shot fire toward us again. As before, the fire bounced off the shield.

“How does that feel?” Baldur asked. The one good thing about working with the gods, I could communicate with them both in human and wolf form.

“Good. I’m not sure how far away they could be standing for me to reach them.”

Baldur nodded his head. “Donte goes to Ward’s left about five steps. Four, move to his right five steps. Savannah, you stay where you are.”

As soon as Donte and Four had moved away, Baldur nodded his head. I pushed my power out and watched as my grey aura moved over the land; I had to focus hard to push it first toward Donte. I felt the strain starting an ache in the base of my skull. Savannah’s yellow aura was made behind mine and gave me the extra power I needed. Our aura encased Donte, covering him in the safety barrier. I turned my head to focus on Four. Once again, Savannah and I joined our auras to push forward, slowly circling around Four.

Baldur watched with narrowed eyes. Once Four was encased in the barrier, and I was holding tight, he nodded towards Jericho. The dragon let go of a ball of fire and hit it directly toward us. I grunted as the fire exploded against the barrier.

“One more,” Baldur demanded.

Once again, Jericho shot a ball of fire. The fire hit the barrier, and I felt my aura rattle slightly. Sweat beaded on my head, and my eyes stung with the saltiness of my perspiration.

“Again,” Baldur barked.
