CHALI

"See? I can move it." Chali said, rotating her arm in a wide overhead arc.

Even though they had better things to do than have her show off her physical ability, Drulf insisted on making sure she was healed to his satisfaction. When she'd resisted, he reminded her the army needed to eat and rest anyway. Drulf was a pain and refused to take 'no' for an answer.

"Okay. Okay, you can relax," he said.

"And here I thought your women ruled?" Shel asked.

"They do," Drulf said. "But I'm going to make sure she can use her arm before she thinks to tackle whatever this mage has waiting for us."

"She looks healthy enough to stuff you into your sack," Shel said before rolling over.

"Thank you for worrying about me, but you don't have to. I'm sure others need your attention."

"The others aren't leading this army and don't rely on magic to keep themselves and everyone else alive."

"No truer words have ever been spoken," Gaeron said from his bedroll. His eyes were closed, but he wore a smile that said he knew he'd just gotten one over on Chali.

"Next time you heal Gaeron, can you please also seal his mouth closed," she said, unable to hold her smile. "How are your hands, by the way? Since everyone seems so worried about my arm, I haven't heard much said about you. Did you really break them?"

"He did," Drulf said while Gaeron cracked open an eye. "Three fingers."

"Well, that's bad, but not too bad."

"On both hands."

"And no one says anything about my hands because they're essentially made of steel," he said, that annoying grin making another appearance.

"The Bonebreaker, made of steel?" Chali said, putting a finger to her chin like she was giving it serious thought. "Doesn't have the right feel to it."

"Steel is harder than bone, and I heard you Olmarian women like hard things. You have so little of it," Shel said. Her shoulders jerked with suppressed laughter. "In Zena's Crowns, all our men are hard, so we're accustomed to it. You'd love it there, Chaos Bender."

Chali played along. "Oh, I imagine I would. I can't find a hard man to satisfy my needs if my life depended on it. If the laws of Chaos allowed, I'd create him myself."

She watched Gaeron, holding her laughter until he opened an eye. When he did, her joy burst out in an ugly snort.

"Go to sleep. You're drunk on power," Gaeron said with a light grumble, rolling over.

Drulf winked at her, and she shook her head with a smile. They needed levity after the events in the garden and the mage's lab. It was good to see the army resting, to hear Shel's snoring. To watch Gaeron's slow breathing. Their shared meal had been short. No one had much of an appetite after losing twenty brave warriors of their own. At least, she hoped, their sleep would be longer.

She'd tried herself, but no matter what position she took, no matter how she concentrated on resting her mind
