Charlie

The night was rough. I couldn’t sleep even though they gave me sedatives. The dreams, the dreams were so vivid. I would see the evening replaying over and over. I would shoot up in the bed screaming, first from the dream and then from the pain. I felt terrible for Wyatt. He didn’t sleep. He stayed next to me the whole night, comforting me when I woke up, gently rocking me until the dream haze subsided.

Wyatt is still lying beside me. “Morning,” I rasp. Gosh, my voice sounds horrible. I didn’t think it would sound worse but it does.

“Hey, beautiful, I know you didn’t sleep well. The last stretch was a good three hours – more than any other time, but how are you feeling otherwise?”

“Uh…sore?” I say it like a question because I’ve never been this sore in my life. Riley and I were in a car accident once a long time ago. One of our friends was driving when we were T-boned. No major injuries but we were so sore afterwards. I thought that was bad…I was wrong. And then there were the really bad times with Tony but even that was nothing compared to this. “How do I look, worse?” I ask him.

“The bruising has gotten darker, but you still look beautiful.” He smiles at me. The genuine love that sparkles in his eyes makes my chest hurt. He leans in and kisses me gently.

“I think your opinion is slightly biased,” I say with a sarcastic smile.

Wyatt sighs and runs his hand down his face. “Are you ready to eat something?”

“Wyatt, are you upset with me?” I ask him as he slides off the side of the bed. I don’t understand what I said to upset him.

“No, baby. I’m just really tired and ready to get out of this place.” His voice sounds weary.

“Maybe the doctor will be in soon. I’ll just go brush my teeth.” Wyatt helps me out of the bed. He still seems distant. I wonder what’s bothering him.

About an hour later we’re relaxing in my room. I’m watching the TV on quietly and Wyatt has dozed off. Watching him sleep is so peaceful. I know I have a lot to do today but I could spend all day staring at him. Dr. Grady comes in then. “There’s my girl!” he booms, jolting Wyatt awake.

“Hello, Doctor. Do you have good news for me?” I ask him sweetly.

“I’m releasing you today but I have to know you will have somewhere to stay for a few weeks until you can travel.”

“A few weeks, I thought it would be days, not weeks. I can’t stay here that long.” Wyatt puts his hand on mine, silencing me.

“I have an assistant working on that. I should know the details shortly,” Wyatt says to Dr. Grady. What the hell is going on? How does Wyatt know about all of this? I wasn’t out that long. Was I?

“I’m confused…How? When? Can someone explain all of this to me,” my voice is straining.
