It was almost closing time and Jenna was openly eavesdropping on the men who were talking not far from her office door. Unable to focus on the stack of work right in front of her, she took a break to stare at her screen saver, wondering why she didn’t just get up and close the door.

The discussion on sports was confusing, lengthy, and chockfull of statistics that might as well have been a stock market report.

AJ’s voice was full of hero worship for Troy, and Rick, who was usually long-winded with his insights, was avidly defending his team. Jenna was about to start back on the paperwork when the conversation turned back to Troy.

“You live on a boat?” AJ asked, sounding intrigued.

“Yep. Although she’s not quite a beauty, she’s seaworthy,” confirmed Troy.

“Ha! That would be stretching it a bit, if you ask me. Both in looks and in style,” Rick said, his tone all smiles.

“That’s how I wanna live,” AJ said, still excited. “Just a boat, a motorcycle, and my freedom.”

Jenna groaned inwardly. A man with a rickety boat and a junky motorcycle was fine for a young man but simply wasn’t the kind of guy a woman could see herself spending the rest of her life with. At least not her. But did it still qualify him for fantasies?

She found herself drumming her fingers.

“It’s not so glamorous,” Troy said. “You’ve seen the shape my ride’s in, and it’s costing me more to keep it together than to sell it for parts. My advice is to take the education route first, go as far as you can go, then you’ll be able to afford all the toys you want.”

“Did you finish school?”

“Sure. Got my degree in business.”

“But?” This from Rick.

“I got burned out. So I’m on a . . . sabbatical, of sorts.”

Jenna rolled her eyes. Sabbatical? Right.

“I know what you mean,” Rick piped in. “I got my degree in biology. Didn’t like it as much as I thought I would.”

There was a brief pause before AJ said, “I don’t see what good it does me, then, going to school for all those years if I’m not going to end up liking what I do for a living.”

“Who says you won’t?” Troy countered. “I love what I do. Whether I’m in an office or doing manual labor, it’s still business.”

Easy advice to dispense, Jenna thought. Maybe if he showed more ambition and responsibility, she’d consider him serious dating material. Well, maybe if he showed that he understood the importance of saving money, buying a home, settling down . . . those kinds of things.

Who was she kidding? They’d already had sex without the preliminary dating that couples usually went through. If they had dated, she could’ve figured out his whole outlook on jobs and life. They couldn’t go backward and start all over again. And she wasn’t sure that moving forward with more sex was a good idea either. Maybe they could move sideways . . . whatever the hell that meant.
