It hit the ashes and began to turn brown on the edges. Soon it was glowing orange.

“We have to wait,” Tom said.

Kevin nodded and stared out at the burning scrap of paper. That could have been me! he thought nervously.

CHAPTER 7

WAITING

Tom and Kevin sat in the cave with their shirt collars pulled up over their mouths and noses. The taste and smell of the volcano’s ash was awful.

“Is it poisonous?” Kevin asked quietly. His voice was muffled. He had his eyes closed tight, because the air was making them water. “The ashes and stuff, I mean,” he added. “If we breathe them, are they poisonous?”
