Beginning with vSphere 6.0, VMware simplified VDP by merging the advanced features with the formerly conventional backup appliance. Beyond that, VDP now also offers better support for EMC Data Domain storage systems.

Deploying and configuring VDP

As VDP is provided as an appliance, we only need to download and deploy an OVA file to install it. Follow the steps listed next to deploy VDP:

Login using vSphere Web Client.

Select an ESXi host from the inventory and click Deploy OVF Template in the Actions menu.

Select the downloaded OVA file and proceed to the next step.

Review the OVA details and accept the license agreement.

Enter a VM name and select a cluster or ESXi host.

Select a datastore and the provisioning type.

Define a network to use and enter networking information such as IP address, netmask, DNS servers, and default gateway.

Review the configuration details and start deployment.
