Okay, now that I have had a chance to eat, I want to find Aaric and ask him about his plans to continue working with Avron factories. If this is what my parents, and he, fought so hard for, I would hate to see it coming to an end. We all knew the dangers of going before we signed on. No, none of us could have imagined our cover would be blown so quickly, but we can’t abandon the factories. Not now. Not when we need them to join us. Wait, that’s it! That’s why people are on edge and hesitant to go back into the city. It has nothing to do with Ryker being shot. It has to do with our cover being blown and how it could have happened had someone not been on the inside.
I’m about to knock on Aaric’s door when I hear hushed voices inside. It’s hard to make out all the words, but I can tell that Rhea, Aaric, Roman, and Kei are in there. They must be discussing what happened earlier today. I press my ear to the door, fully aware how wrong it is to eavesdrop, in hopes of making out their conversation.
“Come on, Rhea,” I hear Kei say exasperated. “First Zan and now this. There’s no way Avron police could have known that was our truck. How can you not think this is an inside job?”
I am convinced my thoughts moments ago are, in fact, valid. With the attack in the city and Zan escaping, it sounds like Kei finally agrees with his uncle. But if this is true, who could it be?
“All I’m saying is that we don’t have a whole lot to go on here,” Rhea defends. “No one has given us any reason to suspect them.”
“What do you think, Roman?” Aaric asks.
“Well, if it was just the attack in the city I would say it was a coincidence. They could have been covering all trucks that enter the city and waiting for our attack. But with Zan...I just don’t know,” Roman answers. “I was there that night and as much as Kei wanted to blame Laike, it wasn’t her fault. There was more to it than someone not being trained. Someone had to have turned off the power, knowing there was a delay before our generators kicked in. Avron wouldn’t have that knowledge unless someone told them.”
“I never blamed Laike,” Kei tries.
I almost laugh. Sure he did. That’s the whole reason he started training me.
“Yes, you so did,” Roman reminds him.
“I was just mad and took it out on her. I never really thought it was her fault,” Kei admits.
Really? This would have been good to know when it happened. For a while I did think it was somehow my fault.
“We’re getting off the subject,” Aaric brings their attention back to the present.
“Okay, so are there any suspects?” Roman asks.
“No one comes to mind,” Kei states. “I’ve known everyone down here for years. I trust them all with my life, they wouldn’t be down here if I didn’t.
