Getting help

Does the topic of capacity planning seem daunting? Never fear. There are a couple of products available that you can use to perform capacity planning for your virtualization infrastructure.

One comes from a company called PlateSpin. PlateSpin is better known for its physical-to-virtual (also called P2V) software, which is discussed in Chapter 9. PlateSpin’s PowerRecon product, though, is a planning tool that includes capacity-planning capabilities, and is capable of working with products from VMware, XenSource, Microsoft, and Virtual Iron. PlateSpin offers several versions of PowerRecon, including a version for free. To learn more about PowerRecon, go to www.platespin.com/products/powerrecon.

Another product is available from VMware itself. VMware Capacity Planner does just what it says. Naturally, it is limited to working with VMware products. Also, it must be obtained through a VMware partner that is certified to use the product. Nevertheless, if you’re building a complex VMware ESX Server-based system, it might very well be worth considering using VMware Capacity Planner. You can find out more about the product at www.vmware.com/products/capacity_planner.
