Chapter 7 – Another Kind of Looting

I find Adara two further stories down in the living room of my apartment, not hers. She grimaces at the mess on my legs and arms then points to the bathroom.

After a quick shower in the only available water - cold; I dress and she hands me my backpack with a large carving knife already stowed.

‘Spider venom added. You have 13 spaces available.’

The venom’s in the backpack now too. So where was the ‘temporary personal storage’ space I brought it down here in? Some other dimension?

“I might flit between both our apartments and outside while you’re out at the store, if that’s OK?” Adara says, “keep a lookout for Mary.”

I nod.

“Take care,” she says, “I don’t want to end up on my own here.”

I almost remind her that the others would still be here if something happened to me, but I don’t want to tempt fate. And in any case, it sounds like she might miss me.

Outside again in hazy, almost ‘smoggy’ daylight and I guess it must be around noon. It still looks like someone drained the brightness and contrast from the sky and everything around me.

On the parking lot, Tony sits in the driver’s seat of a small silver Ford with the door open and hood up. The other guys stand around the exposed engine.

“Totally dead,” Reinhard says and the engine clicks and hiccups. “Same as all the others.”

“Shit,” Mick mutters, “we’ll have to walk.”

“You guys taking backpacks and weapons?” I ask. I don’t want us to be exposed out there. Who knows what we’ll encounter?

“Got an axe in mine,” Tony gets out of the car and closes the door, “just in case.”

Where the hell did he pick that up from?

“No need for tools or bags,” Mick smirks, “but if you’re worried, I spotted a hardware store on the way here in the cab. What I need to stock up on is food and drink.”

We head off down the incline that leads from the parking lot and onto the narrow, winding road that will eventually bring us out near the seafront. What passes for the main road in the quiet resort. From there, it’s only a short further walk to the few shops and a larger supermarket down the far end.

Rachel’s boyfriend takes position at the head of our group with Reinhard. Tony and I make up the rear.

I watch the swagger of the two big guys in front. Imagine if, 24 hours ago, someone had told me that today I’d be on an ‘outing’ with Rachel’s new boyfriend. No way would I have believed it.

But then a more serious thought occurs to me.

“Did you see a mess on the stairs when you came down before? Near the second floor landing?” I ask Tony.

“What kind of mess?”

“Yellowy. A splattered, oversized spider.”

Tony grimaces and shakes his head.

So does that mean ‘bodies’ disappear here shortly after death? Is that why none of the missing people are anywhere to be seen? Did they die too?

I keep my head and eyes moving from side to side.
