Chapter 7 – Infestation

We get back to Tony and Adara but they’ve made very little progress up the line. I’m still in a daze about what I’ve done.

“What’s happened to your face?” Adara frowns at me, “your cheek?”

“I ran into a little trouble,” Dahleen says, “Neil helped me out of it.”

I swap glances with Dahleen.

“Here, let me put something on that for you,” Adara crouches and digs into her backpack.

“We’ve still got to be more than an hour away from getting anywhere near the water,” Dahleen’s eyes indicate the direction of the town square. The same direction as an alleyway where a body in a cape lies dead.

A guy I killed.

“And we’ve been thinking about the time,” Dahleen says to the other two, “I don’t like the idea of traveling back down the trekker once it gets dark.”

“The main route is closed until at least tomorrow,” Adara says and peers at the brooding sky, “we overheard some locals talking about it. That dirt track at night would be a bad idea.” Wide, forest-green eyes look right into my face while she applies cold ointment around my left eye and cheek.

“Exactly what me and Neil think,” Dahleen says.

For some reason, her facial expression with words that group me and her into a ‘couple’, makes it sound almost like she’s trying to make Adara jealous.

Get over yourself, Neil.

“Maybe we should give up and just go back now instead,” I shrug. I’m not sure any of us should be here if the remains of that guy in the alley are discovered.

“We can’t go back with nothing,” Adara shakes her head and turns her attention and ointment to the bites on Dahleen’s arms.

“I don’t think I can risk going back up to the town square now,” I say in a quiet voice, “not after what just happened there,” I look up the line.

“So we should split up again,” Tony says, “some of us look for a place to spend the night. The others stay here. Then tomorrow, first light, we can try to find some transport out of here.”

“You reckon we’re going to find a hotel that’s open here?” Dahleen frowns.

“If not officially open,” Adara says and closes up her backpack, “there’s got to be plenty of houses and apartments lying empty.”

“Like ninety percent of them,” Tony nods.

I gaze up at the spread of white walls and rectangular block buildings graying now in the receding light either side of the town square.

“If you two are happy enough to stay put in the line, I’ll go with Neil to look for somewhere to stay,” Dahleen announces. “I don’t want to chance going back to the town square either. Being recognized as someone who was talking to…” her voice trails away like she thought better about completing the sentence.

“Talking to who?” Tony asks.

The question is met with silence.

“Or we could all go look for somewhere to stay,” Adara says and her face is flushed. She looks flustered. “What’s the point queuing to pay for something when
