Aren
1 year before Vestaâs death
Aren lays back across the bed with a sleepy smile. âI donât believe that.â
âIâm not lying!â Levâs teeth dig into her lip, trying and failing to hide her grin.
The first streaks of light will soon spread across the sky. Itâs Arenâs turn to replace Lev on guard duty, but Oberon let her leave a few minutes early to wake Aren. Naturally, he was waiting in her bed.
He shakes his head, resting a hand behind it before a chuckle rumbles out of him. Lev leaves the cabin door open, standing between his knees and smirking down at him. âI had a thing for you before we met.â
Despite the way his eyes roll, the sentiment warms him. âHow could that be?â
âI heard the rumors: disgraced beta, lone lynxâ¦â Lev bends to press her palms against the mattress on either side of his hips, warm gaze slipping over him like honey. âI was expecting more of a bad boy, but Iâll gladly accept my mistake.â
The words donât sting Aren like they used to. In the time since Lev recruited him, the Timber pack has doubled and continues to grow. What was once a small pack has strengthened. Arenâs glad he didnât let his uncertainty stop him from joining her. Heâs far from the only ârejectâ Lev has taken in, and the Timbers are all the better for that. The pack has grown because Lev found people looking for a home, looking to build something bigger than themselves, looking for another chance. Because of Lev, the pack is safe. Happy. Healthy. Because of Lev, the Timbers can keep opening their arms to new members.
As Arenâs paws settle on Levâs waist, his claws trace through her fur. Itâs easy to lift her on top of him. On the bed, her knees settle on either side of his hips, her fingers weaving through the fur of his chest. When his voice comes, itâs low and hot, tinged with amusement. âDo you still have a thing for me?â
She leans forward, smile hovering over his. âA bigger one, if you can believe it.â
When she captures his lips, he wraps his arms around her waist, pulling her tight against him. Itâs always been easy like this, the trust between them developing into something more. Itâs simple. Itâs sensical. Her mouth molding against his soothes him, their bodies winding like the gentle rocking of a boat. No one calms his spirit like Lev. No one twines through his bones and muscle, fortifying him against
