Researching Schools

If you’re currently in high school and you are serious about pursuing a career as a vet technician or technologist, whether by earning an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, start by finding four to five schools in a realistic location (for you) that offer the degree, certificate, or program you want to pursue. Not every school near you or that you have an initial interest in will offer the program you want, of course, so narrow your choices accordingly. With that said, consider attending a university in your resident state, if possible; this will save you lots of money. Private institutions don’t typically discount resident student tuition costs.

Be sure you research the basic grade point average (GPA) and SAT or ACT requirements of each school as well.

For students applying to associate’s degree programs or greater, most advisers recommend that students take both the ACT and the SAT during the spring of their junior year at the latest. (The ACT test is generally considered more heavily weighted in science, so it may be more important for you.) You can retake these tests and use your highest score, so be sure to leave time for a retake early in your senior year if needed. You want your best score to be available to all the schools you’re applying to by January of your senior year, which will also enable your score to be considered with any scholarship applications. Keep in mind these are general timelines—be sure to check the exact deadlines and calendars of the schools to which you’re applying!
