Some treatments should, arguably, not be offered at all because the risks outweigh the benefits to the animal (although they may benefit the owner). The removal of claws, vocal cords, ears, or tails may make animals easier to keep or cosmetically more attractive, but they are painful and may prevent them from behaving normally. Some hormonal, medical, or surgical treatments may improve the reproductive or competitive performance of horses or farmed animals, but they may be painful or disrupt the animalsâ metabolism. Keeping suffering pets alive (slightly longer) may mean the owner can avoid (or, more accurately, delay) the bereavement, but it perpetuates the animalâs suffering. Experimental treatments may advance veterinary medicine, but potentially at the expense of the individual patientâs well-being. Some of these treatments might be considered illegal or unethical in some countries. However, all in all, veterinarians need to make their own assessments on what treatment will benefit the patient in each case.
Veterinarians need to balance the expected benefits with the potential harms, and know when intervening risks doing more harm than good. To do this, veterinarians need a solid basis of evidence from veterinary science to inform decisions. They need owners who are similarly empathetic and compassionate. They need to have enough information about the individual patient, how they might be expected to respond to each possible treatment, and how they might experience that treatment.
