Occasionally, something might happen on the mat accidentally that is not something the patient is accustomed to, such as a new type of handling or an injection. Depending on the severity of the animal’s anxiety, prior experience, the severity of this ‘breach of the expected’ and the history of the mat being used in safe situations, the mat could potentially be spoiled as a useful tool. To avoid this, any handling that is expected to be too much for the patient to tolerate – based on painfulness or discomfort associated with the procedure or history of known patient sensitivity – should be performed off the mat under an appropriate anxiolytic and sedation protocol. Alternatively, one could precondition the mat to be associated with novel handling where unusual and unexpected handling routinely occurs and is generally safe and comfortable.
