our beautiful white outfit!” Mom was driving Venus home from practice. “I can’t believe this! You looked gorgeous when you left the house.”

“Mom, watch the road!”

“Your knee!” Mom said. “It’s a disaster!”

The blood on Venus’s knee had dried to brown. It was streaked with dirt.

“It’s okay,” Venus said. “It doesn’t hurt much.”

Mom stopped for a red light. She turned to stare at Venus. “Just look at yourself!”

Venus’s white shorts had grass stains. A bit of the gold ribbon dangled from them. A black smudge covered the L on her “Starlet” T-shirt. And her lovely hair was stiff with dried sweat.

“What in the world were you doing?” Mom asked.

“Playing soccer,” Venus said. “And guess what? Somebody said I’m a natural! Well, not as good as Carmen—not yet. Oh, yeah, Mom, I need sweat socks and shin guards and cleats and—”

“Sweat socks? Cleats?” Mom sounded as though Venus were asking for an Uzi. “Do you really plan to go on with this?”

“Mom, I can’t wait ’til Saturday. Saturday, September twenty-third!”

“I know, it’ll be exciting.” Then Mom looked at Venus’s scrape and frowned. “We’ll have to cover up that knee somehow. Maybe it’ll heal by then. Oh, well, if it doesn’t, make-up should take care of it—”

“I don’t need make-up,” Venus said. “I could use a bandage, I guess.”

“A bandage? For Saturday?”

“Oh, and I want a sweatband and—” “You can’t appear at the opening with a bandage,” Mom said.

“It won’t get in my way—Wait. What opening?”

“The OH BOY! TOYS! opening in Mineola. On Saturday, the twenty-third!”

“That Saturday?” Venus groaned. “I forgot.” Mom always arranged those things for her. How was she supposed to remember?

“You’re the Cinderella doll.” Mom smiled. “You’ll cut the ribbon and be photographed.”

“I can’t, Mom.”

“OH BOY! is a very big chain, honey. When they see you at the opening, maybe they’ll want you for their commercials!”

“Mom, I’ve got a game!”

“What game?”

“The Comets! It’s our first game. It’s really important!”

“OH BOY! TOYS!—now that’s important.”

“I’m playing soccer that Saturday!”

“No, you’re not!”

“Yes, I am! I am! I am!”
