Chapter 17

Tower of Terror

The third-floor apartment was spacious and completely empty. They made their way into the master bedroom which had the window they needed.

Olivia unlocked it and peered out. Sure enough, the fire-escape landing was right beside it.

“We have to move fast,” Bo said and dove into her bag. “Sasha, put this on. It’s a chest harness. You’ll be closest to the end of the ladder, and I need you secure while you keep our apparatus in place. Olivia, this is for you. It’s a seat harness. Goes around the waist, and you put a leg through each hoop. I’ll be attaching your safety rope to it at the back of your waist.”

Olivia caught it and did as instructed, feeling Margaret’s worried gaze on her the whole time. “What about you?” she asked Bo.

“I’ll clip on directly to the landing. I don’t need my own rope because I’m not moving. I’ll be who’s holding yours. I’ll feed you your safety rope. It will loop around a strut above us that I’ll be using as a fulcrum point to keep it out of your way.”

Whatever the hell that meant.

“Sasha,” Bo said when he’d finished with his harness, “come with me now, and we’ll set up. Olivia, when you hear me whistle, you can join us. No point in crowding the landing when we don’t need everyone there. It’ll just get in the way of ladder deployment.”

Olivia rather appreciated how in charge Bo sounded. She radiated competence. It was what Olivia needed right now in the face of her rising nerves. She’d chosen her Whisk Taker button pin today (hidden discreetly inside her jacket) to give her courage and cheer her up.

“Everyone, can you remember to keep your voices down during the mission,” Bo instructed. “We don’t want a curious neighbour to hear us halfway up their wall and call the cops.”

Sasha and Olivia nodded. Margaret looked ready to snap with tension.

Bo climbed out the window, followed by Sasha. Olivia passed him his ladder bag, and then she was alone. Well, except for Margaret. Who had begun pacing.

“Did I mention this is an idiotic idea?” she began.

“Once or twice.” Olivia tried a smile. It was met with anxiety. She slid a small backpack she’d brought onto her back. It contained raw prawns, a milk-filled syringe, and enough space to hold Trip.

“We are trusting everyone’s safety to a woman who tried to convince the guard she was into channelling body chakrams. Xena’s weapon?” Margaret objected.

“Yeah, that was a bit dodgy. Wait, you watched Xena?”

She sniffed. “Under sufferance. Helen enjoyed it. She had a…broad…sense of humour. I suspect she liked how schlocky it was. And the lesbian subtext.”

“Good for her. What about you? Did you like anything in it?”

That stymied Margaret for a moment. “It was pretty. The scenery.” Then she scowled, distraction forgotten. “I can’t believe you’re doing this. Or that I helped you! It’s so high up there!”

“Okay, but look at how expert Bo is at this. She won’t let anything happen to me.
