“H ave you heard of the game Fuck, Marry, Kill?” asked Alice.

“Sure,” said Nate, who was feeling almost completely numb at this point. “Somebody gives you three celebrities, and you choose which one you would fuck, which one you would marry, and which one you would kill.”

“Right. My sister and I were at this party filled with rich assholes, and one of the rich assholes suggested that we play. So we went around this gigantic living room, maybe thirty of us, and somebody would name three celebrities, and they’d point to somebody else and make them put them into the three categories. It was going fine at first. They’d fuck Ryan Reynolds, marry Harrison Ford, and kill Timothy Olyphant. Not how I’d arrange it, but you know what I mean. Then somebody, not me, was trying to be cute and named three people in the room. And so it went in that direction.”

“Okay,” said Nate. He decided not to think about this. He’d just let her finish.

“Other people had said they’d kill Renee. She’s the one who was hosting the party, she and her new husband. She laughed about it. It was all in good fun. Nobody was taking it seriously or personally. The wine was flowing, and people started cheating. So they’d add whatever names they wanted. When I got called on, I said I’d kill Renee—which, again, I wasn’t the first, and she was one of the names given to me. Then I added my own names. I said I’d fuck her husband and marry her ex-boyfriend, who was at the party. Her husband didn’t know they’d been a couple, or I’m sure her ex never would have been there. Everybody laughed and we moved on, but Renee…she didn’t think it was very amusing.”
