The writer of the newspaper piece on Arles’s sanitary situation was equally concerned with where the putrid contents of the Roubine du Roi were ultimately headed. Along with the outflow from other sewer arteries, the Roubine du Roi discharged directly into the Rhône, not far from where pumps drew the water for the town’s inhabitants—a process that took place without filtering or protection of any kind. Van Gogh was definitely familiar with that stretch of the riverfront, whether or not he recognized it as the location where the town’s water supply became a broth of microbial cultures (again, this is the nineteenth-century journalist’s description, not mine!). In fact, it returns us to the matter of his gaslight period, and one of his most important artistic efforts therein.
