“She’s asleep,” Benjamin whispered to Samuel as he gazed at Skye’s beautiful face. She wore a contented smile, her breathing relaxed, and her skin glowing from her recent orgasms. He wanted to lie here, just watching her sleep, but too soon duty called.

He dragged a blanket over Skye as he heard the soft knock on the connecting door. A moment later Thomas stepped into the room. Unfazed by Benjamin’s nudity—werewolves didn’t have the same hang-ups as humans when it came to being au naturel—Thomas reported their findings as Benjamin dragged his clothes back on.

“We’ve taken two vampires into custody. We’re fairly certain that they are the ones who attacked Skye—I can still smell trace amounts of her blood on them—but we need to get a positive ID before we call in a pickup crew.”

Benjamin glanced at the woman sleeping so peacefully in Samuel’s arms and wondered if there was any other way to deal with this situation. Unfortunately, just like humans, they had rules and procedures to follow, and their bosses would be none too pleased if they sent in criminals for processing without ticking all the boxes first.

Samuel gave him a sad smile but nodded his agreement to their only real course of action.

“Okay, give us a few minutes to wake Skye and we’ll join you. Where are you holding them?”

“Wilson managed to get them all the way into his motel room with the promise of fresh human.” Thomas smiled gleefully. It wasn’t usually so easy to acquire their targets. They must have been fairly young vampires if they didn’t recognize a vampire from a PUP squad. Most older paranormals recognized them simply by the way they spoke and the confident way they moved. There was just something about working in the squads that gave the men and women a distinctive aura. Of course, with Benjamin’s squad having worked together for over fifty years, it was probably even more obvious.

“Do we know who sired them?”

“Not yet, but I’m guessing they’re only a year old at the most. One of them matches the description of a human doctor wanted for malpractice who went missing only a few months ago. The other has a ‘homeless drug addict’ sort of vibe.”

Benjamin nodded. It wasn’t unusual for homeless people to end up on the vampire food chain—who would believe them if they told the human authorities?—but it was very out of character to turn them. Most vampires were happy to keep their community small and inconspicuous and, until Skye, Benjamin had been one to agree with them.

“Okay, we’ll meet you there in ten minutes.”

Thomas nodded and left the room. If he knew how his friend’s mind worked—and after fifty years working together, how could he not?—Thomas would not only know who the vampires were in their human lives but when, where, how, why they were transformed into vampires and who made them by the end of the night.
