Chapter Fourteen

Harriet had been in a car with Dan on a few occasions now, and she’d never once feared for her life like she did now.

He screeched round corners and ran several red lights. When he finally pulled up outside the club, it was with a final sudden break that flung Harriet forward in her seat so hard it knocked the air out of her lungs. He didn’t bother properly parking, just left the car parked where it was, at a drastic angle to the pavement. Although Harriet suspected if she’d been driving, she would have done a similar thing.

They both rushed out, and found Alice almost immediately stood outside with Petal. Alice looked timid for the first time. She was still in her usual 50s style dress, make up and heels, this time all in various shades of dark blue, but she looked unsure of herself for the first time. Her arms were wrapped around her body and she was shivering in the cold night air.

Harriet took off her jacket and flung it around Alice’s shoulders. Harriet noticed Alice’s mascara had run, little black tracks down her cheeks. She looked like the young girl she was.

“Hey,” Harriet said softly. “What happened?” Her hands were still resting lightly on Alice’s shoulders. She had fully prepared to come here and yell at Alice for her and Connor wandering off, and she could feel Dan’s tense form stood next to her, like he still wanted to yell. Harriet found herself incapable, though; the sight of Alice’s young-looking face just made her think of what all the other poor girls who’d been kidnapped were going through, what Connor might now be going through.

“We came here to check out the club again, but I told Connor that no one was going to tell us anything if we had other supernaturals with us. They especially weren’t going to be interested in taking us to the facility if we did,” Alice mumbled.

“Hang on,” Harriet said, and she felt Dan simultaneously tense up next to her again.

“You were trying to get kidnapped?” Dan said, his voice loud enough to make several heads near them turn.

Harriet half-heartedly shushed him. She was also fuming about this new revelation.

“No, not—we just wanted to find out who was taking people. I didn’t mean to get him kidnapped.”

“How do you know he got kidnapped? Are you sure he’s not in the bathroom?” Dan said hopefully.

Alice glared at Dan. If looks could kill, Dan would be deader than Dracula in daylight. “I’m blind, not a moron. His aura’s not here.”

Dan frowned.

“Look,” Harriet said, tucking Alice under her arm when she shivered. It was slightly difficult considering Alice was taller than her, especially in her heels. Petal whined miserably at Alice feet; even she looked downtrodden. “We’re gonna go in. Dan is going to threaten management until they show us the CCTV files and find out who kidnapped Connor, and then we’re going to find him.”

“We need to do it quickly, though,” Dan said.

“Yes, we—we found out a bit more about the research facility.
