On the nights I'd watch Victor feed, I'd feel repulsion and pity in the moments just after his attacks. But as the inevitability of the feeding sank in and Victor clung to the quiet body and sucked contentedly, my horror would dissipate, as if someone had injected me with a drug that numbed my fears while making my other senses strangely keen. I'd watch Victor with the same clinical detachment a surgeon must feel as he breaks open a chest cavity or cuts into an intestine. Then, as Victor drew me to the victim's throat once he had satisfied himself, I'd salivate, ready to lap at the throat myself. And I would have—even though I'd known I would get sick—if Victor hadn't always stopped me. He wanted me to get used to the sight of the two puncture wounds, the smell of warm blood.

When dawn came and Victor was safely in his niche, I'd try to sleep for a couple of hours before work. But a restless kind of loneliness wouldn't let me relax. Bits and pieces of the scenes from that night would flash before my eyes when I closed them. A little boy's startled look. An old woman's veiny hands trying to push Victor away. A bearded man's lips invoking God before sinking into unconsciousness. Details from dark rooms and alleys came too. A holy water font near a bedroom doorway A studio photo of a toothless infant grinning next to that of a young couple on their wedding day. A scuffed motor scooter chained to a lamppost.

When the weird mixture of loneliness and restlessness made it impossible to sleep, I'd slip on my sunglasses and walk through Rome until the sun climbed too high in the sky for me to stand it.
