Chapter Twelve

“Breakfast burritos? What’s in it?” Kaelene asked, looking down at the rolled up log sitting on the plate Byram handed her as they scooped food from the makeshift buffet set up in the kitchen.

It smelled delicious, but Kaelene had never had one before. Byram grinned, adding fruit salad, a small bowl with some kind of green sauce, and a scoop of potatoes to her plate.

“It’s one of Jessenia’s newest specialties. When she was pregnant, she craved spicy foods like mad,” he explained, holding her chair out as she sat down at the table.

Jessenia and Furio were sitting at the other end of the long table, and he was feeding her bites of food while she nursed their baby. Little Gia was only a few months old, but already she smelled of fur and magic, and Kaelene was excited for the creature she would become.

The Guardians with offspring seemed to be doubly blessed with characteristics of each parent, something that was almost unheard of in the supernatural world. At least, that was what Byram had explained to her.

He'd been sharing tidbits about his group, and that was special. That was something big and rare. Male Vampires rarely treated their women as equals, but Byram had lived away from Clan life for so long. He was different now. Better.

He was perfect, and, the truth was, Kaelene adored him. She loved him more than ever. The man Byram had become was so much better than the boy she remembered.

“Doesn’t she mind cooking for everyone every day?”

“No. It’s her job, actually. Jessenia runs a video blog, recording and sharing her adventures as a chef. She has sponsors and makes a pretty penny doing it.”

“Wow. That is amazing.”

“Come on. Take a bite,” Byram coaxed, his hazel eyes flashing green as he watched her lift the strange beige log looking food to her mouth.

There was no sense in putting it off, she supposed, and Jessenia’s eyes were on her now from the other side of the table. Closing hers, Kaelene took a bite. Then another. And another.

“Ohmygods,” she moaned and Byram laughed as she took a fourth bite before swallowing. “It’s like this soft, spicy, salty, sweet, bright, deliciousness wrapped up in a warm blanket of love,” Kaelene groaned.

She did not even care as the rest of the Guardians who had joined them a little while ago stared while she devoured her first breakfast burrito. The women smirked as the men stared, jaws dropped, but Kaelene gave zero fucks. She and Byram had damn near set their lair on fire last night, and she must have burned like a million calories. Besides, this was the best damn thing she ever ate.

“Try it with the salsa verde,” Byram said as she reached her last bite.

It was okay though. He was already handing her his, his eyes bright green now as he watched her chew. She should be worried about appearances, but Kaelene was completely absorbed with her meal. What the heck was wrong with her?

Uh oh. Oh shit.
