We could hear his screaming from the other side of the valley. I was having supper with Dad at the time, and we both froze and stared at each other, then rushed to the front door and outside. We assumed the noise was coming from the woods, maybe an animal or something, but parents were running about down near the cabins, and we knew something was happening to one of the kids.

I thought of Astrid and started running. Next thing I knew, my dad was cruising by in his car, and he slowed and let me get in, and then we tore down the road. We were at the cabins seconds later. People were crowding into Lucas’s home, and—well, I admit I was relieved. Glad it wasn’t Astrid.

Lucas was screaming with pain, and his parents were frantic. Then the screams turned into growls and howls. Everyone scattered. I heard shouts inside: “Shut the door! Hurry!” A door slammed. More howls. Then the sound of someone—Lucas—throwing himself at the door and walls, clawing at them. It was exactly like that first night you arrived, Hal—when you were in the barn and I was trapped in that storeroom.

All the other kids appeared. Everyone was there—parents, kids, Mrs. Garrison, my dad, and a whole bunch of security guards and helpers. It was pandemonium, and all the while Lucas was locked in a room in the cabin, howling his head off. His parents were going nuts and demanding to know where Old Bart was. My dad tried to calm them down but got shouted out.

As if all that wasn’t bad enough, someone else changed as well. It was like the tension and terror affected the mood of the kids or something. Anyway, Felipe changed, and suddenly there was this huge dragon—just a little bit smaller than you, Hal—thrashing around on the lawn, and all the adults were scrambling away in a panic.

I don’t think Felipe was hurting, but he was scared, jumping around like a dog with fleas. His tail was swinging about, and he kept letting off quick bursts of fire, and everyone was scared of getting whacked or burned or trodden on.

It was a crazy evening. I looked for Astrid. She was cowering behind a car with Bo. The car was running, but there was nobody in it. I figured we were safe there for a second.

“I’m scared,” Astrid said. And she really was. I’d never seen her so scared. Bo was, too, but he never said anything, just peered through the car windows at the dragon. “Get us out of here, Chase,” Astrid said.

The dragon’s tail swung over the car and scraped the roof. It made a horrible sound, and the whole car jiggled. So I pulled the door open, shoved Bo and Astrid in the back, and climbed in the front. I’d never driven a car before, but I knew how. I just put it in drive and stamped on the gas pedal. The wheels spun as I turned off the lawn and shot away along the road.
