Walker

Five long days have passed since we’ve seen Cara. Sure enough, she texted us Monday after school let out and told us Oscar was anxious about Thursday. So we’ve texted a few times and spent our nights on a three-way call like a bunch of lovesick teenagers.

Which has led me to this plan. I’ve been stewing on it since she first mentioned this Donut with Dad thing. I brought it up with Waylon once, vaguely telling him I had an idea, but he left it at that. I’m thinking that he thought if he didn’t pry, I’d leave it be. He should know me better than that by now.

“Waylon!” I call as I get back to the store with our breakfast. He’s in the back, filling feed bags, but shuts the auger off when he sees me. Moving to the break room, -which is really a supply closet, but it has enough room for a small table and few chairs- we take a seat, and I sort our food. “So, remember that plan I had for Cara’s son?”

He hums his approval since his mouth is full of hash browns already. “Well, I thought that we should go to the school for it.”

“You mean like to take him and Cara to lunch, so he’s not there for it?”

Shaking my head, I respond, “No, I was thinking more like we go and have donuts with the kid. So he has someone there, and well… he doesn’t have to miss out on anything.”

Waylon’s eyes widen, and he shakes his head quickly. “No. No way! Cara told us to take it slow with her and the kids. Showing up to her son’s class to have donuts with all the other kids and their dads is definitely not slow.”

“Yeah, but you know they say it’s easier to ask for forgiveness rather than permission. And well, can she be mad if it’s for her son? He wants to do this donut thing and has no one to go.”

“Walker, she might be so mad she forgives us right out of her life. As in forgive and forgets our asses for meddling in her kid’s shit,” he argues, talking faster and getting worked up at my idea.

“I’m going, Waylon. You can come with me, or you can sit here, but I’m going,” I tell him firmly, and I mean it. Cara will have to forgive me. I just can’t stand to think of her or her son upset over something as simple as not having someone to eat donuts with.

He runs his hands through his hair. “Fuck, fine, when is it again?”

“Today at one,” I tell him, getting up to throw my to-go container in the trash and heading out front to make some calls.

“Fuuuck!” I hear him yell, and then he’s storming to the back room. I smile to myself because I won, and we’re doing this. We’re gonna show you just how serious we are, Cara.
