“You know what’ll make that easier, don’t you?” Dave said.

“What?”

“Putting it all on a spreadsheet on my laptop, if you put in the formulae it will work out the total amounts for you.”

“Really, you could do that?”

Dave grinned. “Of course I can. Do you know how much of each item you want?”

Monica shrugged. “Not really. Enough for one hundred people I suppose.”

“We could do a survey of people’s favourite food to make sure you buy the right amount,” Dave said.

Monica giggled. “You’re like my friend Trisha,” Monica said. “She’s a real whizz on the computer too.” Dave started to show Monica how to use Excel when the doorbell rang again.

“Monica, it’s Jason for you,” Mum called from the hallway.

Monica rushed to the front door.

“Hello gorgeous,” Jason said with a wink.

“Jason, I’m glad you could make it,” Monica said. “How come you’ve got paint in your hair?” She flaked some of the red paint out of Jason’s hair.

“Been doing some decorating,” Jason said with a grin.

“You’ve got to meet my cousin. He’s helping me to make a spreadsheet so we can see how much money we’ve got for decorations.” She led Jason into the living room. “Dave, this is my friend, Jason. He’s Trisha’s brother and he’s helping me organise Trisha’s surprise party.”

“Yes, about that . . .” Jason said. “I’ve got bad news. The disco cancelled.”

“What? Why?” Monica wailed.

“They double booked,” Jason told her.

“Oh no!” Monica slumped into the chair. “What are we going to do?” Tears trickled down her cheeks. “The party’s ruined.” Monica sniffed and wiped her eyes on a tissue. “We can’t have a party with no music.”
