‘Oh we’re just passing through so we won’t be involved in that,’ Captain Jack said. The creature looked the explorers up and down. ‘EVERYBODY in the land must take part,’ the creature said. With a wave of an arm the creature summoned four guards. They seized Captain Jack and Zelda and dragged them into the palace.

‘Let us go,’ Captain Jack ordered. He struggled to get free.

The guards tightened their grip and dragged them into a magnificent room. On a throne in front of them sat the Queen. All around them were alien creatures waiting for their turn to perform.

‘What have we here?’ the Queen’s voice echoed around the room.

‘Intruders your majesty,’ the guard replied. ‘They said they’re not going to take part in the song quest.’

‘You what?’ the Queen bellowed.

She glared at the two explorers. Captain Jack and Zelda immediately stopped struggling. Everyone in the room stared at them.

‘EVERYBODY takes part in the Song Quest,’ she boomed.

The guards quivered in their boots and bowed their heads, ‘Yes, Your Majesty,’ they said.

‘I expect to hear your song in an hour and it must be something I’ve never heard before,’ the Queen announced.

‘And if we refuse,’ Captain Jack said.

The groups and bands waiting to perform shuffled further back from the Queen, as if they were afraid she might explode.

‘If I do not hear a song I like our planet will die,’ the Queen whispered. ‘Our planet is powered by music. Every year we have to find a new song which we have to play to keep the planet alive. It has to be something good as we have to sing it all year. Contestants come from all over the galaxy to take part. It is a great honour to be chosen.’

‘But, we have to go home to our own planet,’ Zelda said.

The queen looked fierce. ‘You have one hour before the Song Quest ends.’

‘But, but—’ Zelda tried to argue.

The explorers were dragged out of the throne room and escorted back to their space buggy.

‘What are we going to do?’ Zelda asked Captain Jack after the guards had left.

Captain Jack was deep in thought. All around them people were waiting to hear who would win the Song Quest. Now he knew why they did not look happy. The future of their planet depended on it.

‘We’re going to enter the Song Quest,’ he said.
