Teamwork, collaboration, and online behaviour

Most of the educational benefits of social media described in Chapter 1 apply to wikis: they are collaborative, participative, encourage socialisation, and give students a sense of ownership over their work. But because they compel students to work together, wikis are also particularly effective in teaching students negotiation and teamwork skills, as well as how to integrate diverse perspectives or ideas into the construction of a final intellectual product.

In this way, wikis can also be excellent for reinforcing appropriate online behaviour. Occasionally, disagreements will arise between students about the content or format of a group wiki space. The result is often an ‘edit war’ (discussed in more detail, below), in which one party will make changes to the wiki, only to have the other party change things back (perhaps using the wiki’s ‘revert’ or ‘history’ function, mentioned earlier). Ideally, students should be encouraged to work through any differences themselves in a mature fashion either in person or via the page’s discussion forum. Realistically, however, this edifying scenario could prove uncommon. More likely, this back-and-forth pattern will continue until an administrator (that is, the teacher) decides that enough is enough and that the page should be locked from further editing. These situations, although often disappointing to a teacher who has spent so much valuable time and effort in getting a wiki under way in class, nevertheless provide a terrific opportunity to stop the class and have a time-out to discuss acceptable dispute resolution methods. It also gives you the chance to remind students that poor online behaviour has consequences.
