The Proper Amount Is Essential

When it comes to calcium supplementation, a delicate balance must be struck. It is essential that you get the appropriate amounts of calcium: the right amount can offer you protection, but too much can actually leave you more vulnerable to diseases such as arthritis and heart disease. This is because excess calcium is not simply excreted by the body the way that your body may excrete excess amounts of certain vitamins, such as vitamin C. Instead, excess calcium may gather in the arteries, potentially causing them to clog, or it may collect in your joints and lead to arthritis, or in the kidney and leave you at more risk for kidney stones.

Minerals Naturally occurring substances that enable the performance of vital bodily functions, including building bones and connective tissues.

In fact, in order to prevent the collection of excess calcium in the arteries, drugs known as calcium-channel blockers are sometimes used. There have been reports however, that calcium-channel blockers may be harmful to people with diabetes or high blood pressure. As an alternative to these pharmaceuticals, it may be possible for you to take magnesium, which also can block calcium accumulation and help regulate heart rate. Talk to your doctor to determine whether magnesium supplementation may be right for you.

To prevent blockage caused by calcium, be wise about your intake of this necessary and powerful mineral. A dose of about 500 mg per day of calcium seems to be what the body can absorb best. Remember that too much calcium may be harmful, but the right amounts have protective effects. You just need to strike the right balance.
