Julian

Damn it. He was trying so hard to play it cool. But spending the last hour or so in Jonas’s company reminded him so much of the night they’d met that he didn’t want it to end.

Tomorrow was Christmas Eve. Maybe he could get him to come by tomorrow evening? Jonas handed him his phone and grabbed his coat. If he chose to ignore his invitation well, he wasn’t going to beg.

At least not yet.

“Are we all set back here?” Jonas asked.

The kitchen was cleaner than when he first arrived. He double-checked the oven and made sure all the coolers were closed properly.

“It looks like we’re good. I guess we should get going. It’s late.”

He wished they could stay longer.

“I have to reset the alarm back here. Do you mind grabbing my stuff and I’ll meet you by the entrance?”

“Sure. No problem.”

Jonas disappeared, and he looked over the ledge at the front counter. Everything was back in its place. He’d have to come downstairs and ring up the two waters they drank tomorrow, but he’d bring home the chicken bake.

He locked the back door, set the alarm and walked the long hallway to the front of the cafe. Thankfully Jonas was waiting outside of the cafe, he’d forgotten to tell him the motion sensors would pick up his movement if he stood by the front set of chairs.

“We are also doing a dry run of a table setup tomorrow morning. You’ll be able to see the centerpieces and tableware if you come down in the morning.”

“What time do the guys come to set up the pillars?” he asked as they walked to through the lobby.

“They gave me a window of seven to nine in the morning. Actually, I may need your help in the morning clearing them through security.”

He groaned. “Security is a pain in the ass with deliveries. Did you instruct them to come in through the loading area?”

Jonas stopped and turned toward him. “Tommy said due to the height of the pillars the only way it would work was for them to come through the front doors. There’s a service door to the right of the main entrance that can be opened.”

He nodded. He definitely needed to be there, as security would be very unhappy with that plan. Jonas handed him his coat and scarf and waited until he put them on then handed him his bag. He’d been so caught up in the plan for tomorrow, he’d forgotten to take them from him.

“Thank you for dinner.”

“You’re welcome.”

He watched him slip his slender arms into his jacket. His arm missed the sleeve and Julian wanted so badly to help. But he couldn’t. If the chill in Jonas’s voice was any indication, he still had a lot of work to do.

He paused as the idea formed in his mind. He needed to play this cool—to start all the way at the beginning again. And pray he didn’t do something stupid in the meantime.
