Morning arrived too early. I opened my eyes, peeking over at Isabelle, who was still asleep. I did not want to bother her, so I slipped out of bed and slid on a pair of grey track pants that were draped over a nearby chair. Exhausted, I sluggishly trudged downstairs to the kitchen for coffee.
When I entered, the chef was busy preparing breakfast. He briefly made eye contact with me before he grabbed a small cup, poured stove top coffee in it, then set it on the island with the newspaper.
âGood morning, sir.â
âStove top.â I turned the mug in front of me and hooked my finger in the handle. âMy favorite.â
âYes, sir.â He offered a polite grin before spinning back to the food he was preparing.
Though I checked the news on my laptop I still enjoyed reading the traditional newspaper in the morning when I got the chance. It relaxed me. Always starting with the sports section, I thumbed through the pages. Distracted, I could not get my mind off last night. Mindlessly, I stared at the words, not even realizing I was too preoccupied to read it. I stood, carrying my coffee and the paper to the table then sat down.
He plated breakfast for me and brought it over, laying it in front of me on the black, woven placemat. Typically, I would wait for Isabelle, but after last night, I wanted her to sleep as late as she needed. We were up until the incredibly early morning, taking advantage of our uninterrupted time together.
âThank you, Jean-Pierre.â
I took a bite of my food, then felt a vibration in my pocket. A part of me wanted to ignore it, knowing it was not Isabelle. However, work never stopped. Sliding my phone from my pocket, I read a text from Joseph.
Heading out to see my girlfriend before Iâm needed back at the estate.
Be back soon.
Knowing there were important things to be done after I finished, I ate with no more interruptions. Jean-Pierre strode over, grabbing my dishes.
âThank you.â
He bowed his head. âMy pleasure, sir.â
Another several vibrations in a row came from my pocket. I took my phone out, checking. It was Joseph once again.
By the way, I took the laptop and all the files from Lindsayâs room and asked Helen to clean everything else in there.
I asked her to put it all in a box for now in case we need it for anything.
Iâll store it in the office where I put the laptop and files.
Theyâre on your desk so we can all go through it more extensively.
Not wanting to take up too much of his time or mine, I offered a quick reply as I sauntered toward my office. Thank you. We can worry about that tonight.
When I entered the foyer, I instantly halted in my tracks. A horrific scene was unfolding right before my eyes that shook me to my core. Noahâs arms were wrapped around my sisterâs waist and hers were tightly around his neck. Their faces were pressed together as they kissed way too passionately for me to handle.
