Stupid bitch won’t know what hit her, Hugo thought, returning from his recollection of the argument.

“Are you ok, mi vida? You look preoccupied like a psycho,” Gloria jested.

“You are quite right, my dear, you are quite right,” Hugo replied, adjusting his posture in his seat.

He couldn’t wait to be back in a short twelve hours.

CHAPTER 11

The night turned into morning too soon and Melissa woke with an icky stomach. She had spent the entire night dwelling over the next twenty-four-hours and how she could convince Hugo against obeying Andres’ request. Despite the kiss they had shared in her father’s house, she couldn’t imagine that Hugo would actually cheat on Gloria, but she couldn’t be sure anymore.

As Melissa enjoyed the temporary peace in her bedroom, she thought about how to tell Hugo why she had married Andres, but she dreaded his reaction and possible hatred towards her.

She still stood behind her choice of marrying Andres to save her family home, even if she knew it would make her look like a gold digger to the outside world, but the pain of losing something so dear to her weighed more than people’s opinion of her. Although, she wasn’t sure whether Hugo would see things from her perspective. After all, he was Andres’ brother and the guilt of his accident laid heavy on his shoulders.

She glanced at the silver clock on her nightstand and her heart plummeted.

“Shit!” she exclaimed, jumping out of bed.

It was only 8.30 am but she had her weekly meeting with her boss in less than five minutes. Without the time to shower, Melissa powered up her computer and brushed her golden locks into a tight ponytail. She changed into a pair of black leather trousers and a sky-blue cardigan, not forgetting to wash her face and apply some natural makeup too.

After getting comfortable on her desk chair, she took a deep breath and joined the online meeting. Having worn her high heels all last night, she slipped into leather slides that had a comfortable furry coating inside. She exhaled deeply and closed her eyes as she felt her tired feet resting against the soft cushion of the slides.

“Melissa, I have been waiting for you all morning!” her boss said.

Melissa smiled with apology and said, “Good morning to you too, Jason.”

Jason ignored her greeting and paced his office on the screen. Melissa frowned and tilted her head.

“Jason, what’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong, Melissa, we’ve just had the biggest breakthrough in company history!”

“Oh,” Melissa replied, her mood sinking. “Someone has landed a big deal in the office?”

“You bet someone has!” Jason yelled, running his fingers excitedly on the keyboard.

“Well, I’m happy for them. New business is always good, and I know organic growth is an important element, especially for partners like yourself, Jason.”

Even though she felt happy, she couldn’t resist feeling slight envy in her heart. There had been a time when she had been the one bringing new business to the company. In fact, she had been rewarded for it many years in a row and rumour had it that she had been making her way to the next associate.
