The Whig Legislative Agenda

With majorities in both houses of Congress, Whigs called a special session in 1841 to enact their party’s national legislative program. Their agenda included the following:

Repeal of the Independent Treasury Act and the charter of a new Bank of the United States

Enactment of a protective tariff

Passage of the log cabin bill (the Preemption Act of 1841), originally put forward by the Democrats, which provided easier terms for obtaining western lands

Endorsement of a measure to distribute the proceeds from the sale of public lands to the states
