One night, exactly a week following his accident, Alan woke up with his mind as clear as the brook that meandered across his parents’ vast grounds in Shropshire. He had gone to sleep still grappling with the fact that he was a man of thirty-seven years and not in his late twenties as he’s thought; trying to cope with the knowledge that several years of his life was lost to him for good. No matter how positive Dr Fournier sounded about his prospects, Alan wasn’t deceived. The amnesia was there to stay, just like his blindness and paralysis.

Except that the good doctor had been right all along. Alan awoke sometime past midnight with his memory returned in its brilliant, wonderful entirety. Laura! Of course, his wife was Laura and not Early as he’d stupidly thought. He’d given her the name after all… Earlie, after Earl Grey Tea, her addiction. These days she drank even more of the bloody stuff since the evil thing entered their lives. The evil thing!

Alan’s heart began pounding, racing so fast he thought he would faint. It all came back in a flood of terrible recall. The loathsome creature he’d given a lift, the Night Market of the dead, Laura’s night terrors, his trip to the market. Except he never made it there. Had they somehow stopped him from making that trip? He shook his head violently. He mustn’t start thinking like Olu, his driver, who had been visiting him every day in hospital and whom he hadn’t remembered till now. Alan felt a pang as he recalled the happy face of the young driver with his Malcolm X t-shirt and Fela music. He had died together with the old man in the accident. And all his fault. They would’ve never made that trip but for the lure of his bribe. Blood money. He must get Olu to take something to their families, his personal compensation for his role in their demise.

Alan remembered something else. The doctor said he was being flown back to England in a couple of days as he was now strong enough to cope with the flight. He had to stop them. No way was he flying to England when Laura’s life, their lives, depended on his remaining in Nigeria and recovering that cardigan from the evil thing. But how? The task had become even more monumental with his paralysis and blindness. Suddenly, he wished he hadn’t remembered, that his mind had remained in its clouded paradise. Worst of all, he would now have to complete an official report on why he was in that un-approved vehicle at an unknown location at the time of his accident. He didn’t have the foggiest idea of the story to give the High Commission.

Everyone was ecstatic at the return of his memory. The medical staff cheered and his driver Olu pumped his hands several times in joy. And Bisi… darling, beautiful, magnificent Bisi, his secretary, who had spent almost as much time as Laura at
