To be considered professional, agencies must also have transparent standards for effective practice, and procedures that guarantee client rights, proper procedures, and ethical behavior on the part of paid and volunteer staff. These may also be requirements of accreditation. Some agencies refer to NASW’s Standards for Social Work Personnel Practices, Cultural Competence, and Clinical Practice.25

Accreditation and Other Sources of External Validation

Many social agencies are subject to accreditation by respected professional bodies. These may include state government agencies. In some cases, accreditation is a requirement for affiliation with an association. In others, it is a voluntary form of self-regulation and self-control through submission to an agreed-to set of standards. Accreditation is a way of certifying to funders, clients, and other key publics, that the agency meets at least the minimal standards of good practice and can be held accountable if it does not meet those standards. Accreditation generally requires periodic renewal.
