Manufacturing: training
Once a 3D model has been produced and agreed upon, the product itself will need to be manufactured. In order to create a new product, any company will need to level up the knowledge of its workforce. In any manufacturing company, employees will need to complete training before they are able to start producing a new product. This ensures that they understand the components required in what can be complex devices, such as smartphones, TVs or cars. Of course, there are elements of this production process that are completely automated and carried out by robots, but other steps need to be completed by hand. To have an effective and efficient production line, your workforce needs to be upskilled to be proficient with the new production methodologies.
There are two ways of doing this. The first is the old way of training people by bringing them to a location with a dummy production line where they can be taught how to assemble the products. For this to work, you not only need a large physical space but also for that space to be easily accessible for everyone you want to train. In addition to the training itself, you also need people to monitor the traineesâ progress and performance. How scalable is this approach? Not particularly, especially during a global pandemic when people's mobility and presence at work is affected to the point that you cannot have many people together in a single space simultaneously. This is where the immersive technologies of the Metaverse come in.
Companies can use the same kind of 3D model that they are already using for the design and design review processes, as well as for user experience testing, to create training modules for their staff. In doing so, they can upskill their employees to enable them to physically make the product. Of course, delivering and distributing training is made much easier when it is in a digital format.
Imagine that you could send an email or push notification to the mobile phone of every employee who needs to complete the training, telling them to put on their headset, log into their corporate account and complete the training in an immersive space. Studies conducted at Stanford University through the immersive learning platform provider Strivr have found that those completing training using its VR solution reported up to 15% higher memory retention rate when compared to normal eâlearning methods delivered via 2D screens. This demonstrates that learning by doing is important to improve the stickiness of the information being shared. In addition, the VR training solution led to 30 per cent higher employee satisfaction, and those who undertook the training scored higher on tests 70 per cent of the time1.
For those undertaking the training in a 3D immersive environment, as opposed to with 2D training materials, the experience will better prepare them for stressful situations.
