I SOLD the table three days later to a lady from out of state who stopped in because she saw the store’s billboard on the highway. When I presented the cash to Cole that afternoon, his eyes went wide with a lot of different emotions. Mostly I focused on what could only be pride. He’d made something on his own, out of scrap, and he’d been paid for it.

We made our dinner plans for Friday, a real date, and the rest of the week took forever to pass by. Cole borrowed my van and came home with a busted bookshelf from a thrift store—his new project. I loved seeing passion in him. He smiled more that week than in all the other weeks we’d known each other combined. He had a nightmare on Wednesday, and we worked through it like always. I figured out life in a sling and eventually cut out the Percocet altogether, so Cole didn’t hover as much when I was taking the stairs.

Plus I wanted to be totally sober for our date. Funny how you could get nervous over something so simple when you’d already been living and sleeping with the guy for two months.

Bethann had avoided me ever since dropping her baby bomb, which I kind of hated. No one who came into the store had any gossip about her condition, so she obviously hadn’t told Adam. Cole brought it up once, but since I couldn’t talk about the problem, he didn’t mention it again. I’d stalk her over the weekend and make her talk to me.

Meredith agreed to close down the store for me on Friday, so I could go upstairs and get ready for our date. Not that I told her it was for a date and she hadn’t asked. Cole was already showered and dressed and waiting in the living room. He was wearing his best jeans and a navy blue sweater that made his eyes stand out, and his shaggy hair was lightly gelled. My gut tightened. I fought the urge to rip those clothes right off and kiss every inch of him, dinner be damned.

He smiled. “Hey.”

“Hey back.” I couldn’t ravish him yet, but I could damned well kiss him silly, so I walked over to the couch and did just that. I left him panting, eyes sparkling, a little stunned.

“What was that for?”

“You look too good to not kiss.”

“Comments like that will get you laid tonight.”

“Good, I hope so.”

I landed another attentive kiss before I went upstairs to change my clothes. I shaved too, because the beard thing wasn’t working for me, and I was off the pain pills. One-handed was awkward, but I managed to do it and not cut myself a single time. I chose a pair of tan slacks and green button-up. Like my flannel shirts, I could get the sleeves over the cast easier than some of my sweaters.

Shirts would be easier if I’d done this in the summertime.

My sling kind of dulled the effect of the outfit, but my doctor said I could stop using it in another week or so if I wanted to.
