CHAPTER 15

“There is Lady Pemberton’s mansion,” Basel said as they turned a corner and saw a very large English mansion loom up in front of them.

“Well, I can certainly see why it’s referred to as a mansion. It’s huge. How many rooms does it have?”

“I should know, but I don’t,” Basel said. “I do know there are four suites complete with their own bathrooms and twelve bedrooms. Since it’s built in the style of an old English mansion, there’s a butler’s pantry, library, breakfast room, conservatory, kitchen, drawing room, study, billiards room, nursery, sewing room, and some others I’ve forgotten. There’s even a couple of servants’ rooms.”

“I had no idea. Basel, you said there was a nursery, but Lady Pemberton told me she didn’t like children.”

“She doesn’t. Most of the rooms are in the mansion simply because Lord P wanted it to be a quintessential English mansion. As an English lord, he felt that he and Lady P should have a home that reflected their status. He wasn’t a snob, actually he was far from it, but it was just the type of thing that would be expected of an English lord. Believe me, most of those rooms are never used.”

“Basel, do you and your wife live in the mansion?” Arthur asked.

“No, there are three cottages on the property. Flossie, the cook I mentioned, and her family live in one, my wife and I live in one, and the head gardener, Diego, lives in one. However, there are a couple of servants and maids who do live in the servants’ quarters in the mansion. It’s actually a wing on the first floor and allows the servants to be pretty much on call when she wants something.”

“Did Lord P have a lot of relatives?” Arthur asked. “I’m just wondering who will eventually inherit the mansion?”

“I have no idea who will inherit it, because Lord P was an only child, and from what I’ve heard, the only relatives he had were some cousins that were many times removed. I suppose Lady P’s sister would inherit it, unless Lady P has made other arrangements. Okay, are you ready for this?” Basel asked turning towards Arthur and Dani.

“Yes, I suppose the sooner we get this out of the way, the sooner we can head to London, which I’m very much looking forward to,” Dani said.

When they were out of the car, they followed Basel into the mansion and down the hall. Dani felt like her eyeballs were whirling as she tried to take in the beauty and grandeur of the mansion itself as well as the antiques, which she assumed had to be priceless. She saw nothing that looked modern and was glad that Lord P had prevailed. A California theme would have been most inappropriate.

Basel stopped in front of a door and knocked. A moment later a woman’s voice said, “Hurry up and come in. You’re late. I’ve been waiting for you.”

He opened the door and they saw a tall imposing woman sitting
