CHAPTER 18
Trilla had noticed something ever since that day she'd accidentally punched Putman: the sea of gray jumpsuits parted for her when she moved through the lunchroom and reverent whispers ran through the throngs of students as she passed.
She didnât know how she felt about it.
The girlâs morning shower had nearly erased the sharpie marker correcting her identity on her wrist. She was in the process of fixing it discretely under the lunch table when she felt a hard tap on the shoulder.
"Well, you put me in the nursing station for a while. Proud of yourself, are you?" the voice belonged to Putman. His hulking form towered over the girl and created clenching fear in her stomach.
"You shouldn't have taken my book," Trilla said, trying to fight her flight instinct which already had her partially standing.
"You shouldn't have been in my way."
The pair stood eye to eye, neither moving. Finally, Trilla lowered her gaze and began to walk away.
"Hey! I'm talking to you!" the boy yelled after her, a large finger raised.
"I have no interest in detention so you'll have to talk to me another day," Trilla called as she speed-walked out of the lunchroom and down the hall.
When she rounded two corners and knew she was safe, she leaned against the concrete wall, resting her forehead on the coldness. She wasn't sure why, but her breath was coming in short gasps. Almost instantly her vision began to spin.
The girl stood in a wide-open field, her bare feet snuggled into the cool dirt. Soft waves of green grass around her waved up to her waistline. She took a deep breath in through her nose, desperately trying to calm the spinning in her mind, but there was no scent of flowers in the airâno freshness or breeze.
Something was wrong.
A shadow from above crossed her face. She looked up, peering into the last rays of sun streaming through dense, dusky clouds. Weaving in and out through the clouds she saw the dark outline of a dragon.
Her heart plunged to her stomach. She was instantly certain it was Declaire.
The dragon continued to circle but each circle was tighter than the one before it. There was a tenseness about her wings that made Trilla look over the waves of grass, scanning for her prey.
The prairie stretching in front of the girl was empty except for the softly swaying grass. A craggy mountainside rose out of the green sea of foliage. Trilla almost dismissed that too until she saw the girl.
She was about Trilla's age and curled into a tight ball next to a boulder, trembling. It was her flowing, brown hair that gave her away. She'd tucked most of it behind her ears, but a strand had escaped. It flapped in the wind like a giant banner to the dragon above.
Before Trilla could shout a warning, Dreclaire dove.
The beast's huge body plummeted towards the rock and the girl next to it.
Trilla slammed her eyes closed, but nothing could muffle the girl's scream and the crunch of bone, forever silencing her.
