“Can you do it?”

Jonah had left the workboat at its usual slip and was tying the Whaler in its own place at the dock.

“I’m fine,” he said over his shoulder. “I can tie up a boat.”

“No. I’m asking if you can fix my motor.”

Jonah turned slowly. Sumi stood on the dock above him. Her eyes were hidden behind the dark glasses, but a small smile creased the corners of her mouth.

“You want me to work for you?”

“I’ve got a ton of work and I’m working against a deadline. But you can’t show up late.”

“I tried to tell you yesterday,” Jonah said. “I have to take my sister to swim team at one.” He stepped up onto the dock next to her. He saw Bert watching them from inside the store. “I can get here by one-fifteen.”

“You can do the motor tomorrow, right?”

“Yes.”

“What’s your name, anyway?” she asked.

“Jonah.”

She smiled. “Like the guy who got swallowed by a whale?”

He didn’t answer. He’d only heard that one about a thousand times before.

“I’m Sumi.” She stuck out her hand. “See you tomorrow at one-fifteen.”

Her fingers were small and thin, but her handshake was strong. She walked to her van and drove off in a curtain of dust.

Jonah looked out across the pond. Sunlight played off the ripples near the barrier beach. He closed his eyes and was back in the Whaler, flying across the water with the salt air in his face. He thought about the Evinrude motor waiting for him in the lean-to and raised both fists in the air.

“Yes,” he whispered. “Yes!”
