The Samba server

Samba is a program that implements SMB and CIFS, the Windows file-sharing protocols. As such, it's ideal as a platform to share file under Windows, since all the clients can access the server without additional software. Over time, Samba has grown to support advanced sections of Windows file sharing to a point where it can operate like any other Windows file server or Primary Domain Controller (PDC).

To install Samba, you can either select the Samba Server option during the Ubuntu installation or after the installation with the help of the tasksel program, or install the samba, samba-doc, smbfs, and winbind packages separately with the help of the package manager, as follows:

sudo apt-get install samba samba-doc smbfs winbind
