DENTISTRY COMES OF AGE
The â80s and â90s brought tooth implants, again individualized patient by patient and installed painlessly with appropriate anesthesia (even with the additional humanity of proffered pre-procedure tranquilizers). Since then, more sophisticated and more quickly installed implant therapy has become the standard, together with cosmesis as a desirable and accepted norm.
More importantly, recognition and treatment has come to be critical to dental care. The recognition, superseding all of this development, relates to the more basic condition of the gum that holds the teeth, which needs both treatment and maintenance!
You may brush âtil the cows come home, but it doesnât substitute, or even partially erase, the critical importance of gum treatment. Which is why our gums have become perhaps the primary focus of dental care. If your gums arenât in a healthy state, dental replacementârather than careâbecomes the norm (not an entirely happy state of affairs).
Economically speaking, much of dentistry is now covered by medical insurance (not the cosmetic part, of course). The cost of that insurance is on a dealerâs choice basis, or, in other words, it comes out of your own pocket.
Another consideration: todayâs crop of dentists are the product of two years of postgraduate university-based instruction before DDS can be attached to their names, and thereafter, many complete residencies in advanced or specialized dental techniques.
And, not atypically, todayâs dentist will examine the lymph nodes of the neck, inspect the entire mouth and tongue for signs of trouble, and suggest treatment for such entities as dry mouth or cold sores. All of this advancement should help to alleviate fears or concerns about dental care and encourage regular six-month visits to the dentist.
Now, having dealt with dental phobia and discussed the existence of healthy and aesthetic modern dental choices, there remains an even more important dental topic to address.
